2-story. I like my bedroom separate from my living area. A ranch floor plan makes me feel like it is all together - no matter what the actual floor plan is.
Plaidmom might have a point though -- I grew up in a 2 story with a full basement, so who knows if that has subconsciously influenced me or not.
My daughter, 9, was not sure which horrified her more about living in NM: the tarantulas and brown recluses and rattle snakes, or living in a one level house with not even a basement. (During the 3 weeks we've been here, she's adjusted quite well to the latter issue.)
Ours is a ranch 1660 sq ft over a basement, plenty of room for me, DH and the peke. In our 60's now, I'm glad we chose a ranch. The basement is great for storage but we rarely go down there. The house is 4 years old. I don't plan on moving anytime soon.
Well, I have been house hunting for the past week or so, and ended up going with a 2,200 sq ft 1 level house with a finished room over the garage. It's just the hubby and me at home these days and the plan just seemed to fit our lifestyle best...
I grew up in 2 story houses--Colonials and Plantation-style--but I prefer one story houses. As I've been house hunting, I love the look of craftsman homes, but ranch is the prevalent style here and likely what I will wind up with.
No I would take a single story nay day. Now days there are tons of tweo stroy bgecause they are ceahper to bouild because of land and the foundtio being expensive. i persoanlly see more problems with two stroies than single story all the time.
I grew up in a 2-story farmhouse and my preference depends on what region the house is located. For areas with milder summers and colder winters, I prefer a 2-story colonial or farmhouse (also a central-staircase fan). It's nice to have the bedrooms on the 2nd floor where it might be a little warmer at night than downstairs. In the south, with mild winters and hot summers, I prefer 1-story homes.
My husband grew up in El Paso among a sea of ranchers. He covets 2-story homes, no matter where we are. He won't even consider owning a 1-story house.
One thing that is a big 'must' for us is having a basement. Having all that extra space for storage is essential and I miss it terribly now that I'm living in areas where basements are practically unheard-of.
