The house we're currently renting has some VERY light carpeting. During the time we moved in with walking around quite with shoes on , and just living here has created some dark spots in the higher traffic areas (the stairs in particular).

Does anyone know an at-home way to clean this? Before we move out I think we'll be getting the carpet professionally cleaned to get it back to the way it looked before--but for now, I'd love to find a way to make it look a bit better without a professional job.

Thanks!

Vinegar is pretty good for stains such as soda.

I don't know other than a general overall cleaning. I despise light colored carpeting. We owned a house and it came with cream carpeting. There was a no shoes, no food or drink or anything else that might make a mark on the carpet areas. I used to have to spot clean it all the time.

One occasion my oldest son came down sick and we had given him pepto. Imagine projectile pink on that cream carpeting

Have you tried resolve granules on the carpet?

The Rug Doctor type cleaners that you can rent at many supermarkets and home improvement stores generally work reasonably well and don't leave the carpets overly soggy.

Wow! I could have written your post! I make my kids take off their shoes as soon as they come home, but it hasn't helped much. I tried Resolve, but as I've noticed with other home treatments, it gets clean and then dirt sticks to it and makes it even worse. I'm thinking about renting a carpet cleaner from a home store or a grocery store. It's only $29.00 plus cleaning solution. Or I might buy a home carpet cleaning machine that I can use in my new home too.

I've moved and thankfully have darker carpet now. We bought a cleaner for small jobs called a Bissell QuickSteamer and it doesn't do as well as the big machines but it works pretty well on spots. My next house is all hardwood and throw rugs!

I think the QuickSteamer is the one I was looking at. I used to have some big, heavy, awkward carpet cleaner, but it broke. I want something a little more manageable this time and that one looks pretty good and isn't even very expensive.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Yes, I HATE having such light carpet--everything shows! But, alas, I have to deal with it at the moment. I think I'm going to try the resolve product, and then if that doesn't work rent one of those carpet cleaner things and use that.

Thanks again!

Previous home was all cream carpet so we invested in a carpet cleaner. Shoes were always removed at the door.
