I find this thread very interesting. I hope the OP keeps us posted on the results. We also had an odor problem when we moved in which cause us to have to replace our garbage disposal, and all the pipes under the sink. The odor was awful, and we could not get it to go away.
I can relate to the OP's dilemma. Please keep us posted.
The OP was in 2009. Maybe the poster will see this and tell us whether putting water in all the drains worked.
Part of the living space in our house has carpet on concrete slab. It has never caused an odor. The house is 27 years old and the carpet has been replaced only once. We do have a shower down there that is rarely used, and if I forget to put water in the drain it will cause a sweetish unpleasant smell that goes away as soon as I water it.
