The smell was coming from my breaker box! My central heating unit was not working properly. One sequencer was not coming on. So, the unit was running much longer than normal. The breaker was not the proper size, so it did not shut off. It was getting hot and melting. That was the awful smell of amonia.

The original post is many many years old. I'm sure the smell has dissipated by now.
Someone resurrected this thread with a similar problem (Post #19) and the recent replies were to that poster. His problem was apparently pretty serious, as he posted today that something in the breaker box was overheating and melting.
