My last NYC kitchen was smaller than many walk-in closets in other cities. As you walked in, to the right was a double sink and then the stove. To the left was the apartment-sized refrigerator and base cabinets with a countertop less than 3' across. The entire footprint was approximately 6' x 7', with a total of approximately 3' x 6' open floor space.

It is pretty small...I'll give you that, but it's laid out much more efficiently than my kitchen, which isn't a whole lot bigger. When I bought my house I was a single mom with teen-aged kids, and with all of the activities and sports that they were involved in we didn't eat a lot of sit-down meals. The kitchen appealed to me then, as it took up so little space, and I didn't use it much anyway.
Now, 16 years later, my kids are grown and gone, and I've discovered a love for cooking that I never would have thought I'd develop. Now I hate my kitchen and would love to have more space. I'm thinking of renovating, but I'm thinking even harder about relocating, so we'll have to see how it goes.
My sister bought a house that was listed on the internet. The kitchen looked regular size but in real life the floor space is about 4 feet by 4 feet. It works for them and sad to say is a bit larger than the one she left.
Just goes to show that bigger isn't always better. Good for you.
I had a smaller kitchen for 3 1/2 years and I made 6 different meals every day in that kitchen. I see no need for big kitchens and I love, love, love to cook. Just give me a pantry or at least a big container "somewhere" for some storage and a little counter space.
Gotta say I don't understand the need or want for big gourmet kitchens when people don't cook as much anymore Doesn't seem to be practical or logical to me.
I actually prefer a very small kitchen with access to the living areas of the home.
I love your warm, inviting kitchen. My kitchen is a little bigger than yours, but it pales in comparison to the huge kitchens of modern houses.
