I've been considering some home improvement projects lately and have been getting outrageous quotes. For example:

Gutters... only for front and rear of house, about 100 LF worth, quoted $3,000

Decorative fiberglass door, nothing fancy, $2700 ($800 for installation alone!)

Granite countertops, smallish-medium sized kitchen, cheapest granite in stock, $5,000

Dimensional shingle overlay on roof, $8,000

These numbers sound awfully high, dont they?? Seems there are some smaller local companies that do a good job for much much cheaper... these quotes are from the bigger national brands.

Just goes to show, if a receptionist answers the phone, you're paying too much.

For granite (especially cheaper kind) in a small kitchen, $5000 does sound a bit high. An undermount sink hole makes it more b/c they have to finish the edge, and this does not include backsplash, right? Just 2 simple pieces of granite? That should be closer to $3000, although places like Lowe's might be able to do closer to $2000. I'd get some more bids. The small local companies are usually more fair, have less overhead, etc.

What really threw me off was the door though.... similar one can be had from home depot for about $650 + tax including installation.

If he got bids of $5000 from a small town contractor I will bet the farm that Lowes would come in at $8000. Where did you get that crazy information from?

From real life, based on bids I got for my own small kitchen. But of course every regional area is different..

We just contracted for 700 sf feet of really good flooring at a cost of roughly $10 sf, turn key.

Lowes quoted us $9,000 for the same job using cheap, self-adhesive vinyl tiles.

You've really gotta watch 'em!

We paid under $1,000 for seamless gutters a few years back for about 90 ft so your quote does seem a bit high.

A certain amount of that will vary based on local/state building codes. You do pay more for doors, windows, and roofing in Florida than you do in many other places because of hurricane code issues. Having said that, the door can be had for much cheaper, even down here, the roof sounds typical for my area for an average-sized one story, and unless you're talking some sort of heated no-clog system, the gutters sound really overpriced.
