Ours did that for about a year and a half. Our remedy was to futz around until it was one of the $5K in electronics casualties from a freak lightning storm strike and let the insurance company buy us a new one, which is not a path I'd recommend others to take.

That was going to be my only other guess! Lightning strike. I had that happen to me also- but it was a total fry! Didn't work at all.
My three-year-old opener had that problem. The repairman found two issues: (1) a very, very small section of the track wasnt straight and sometimes the door would catch on it. Who knows why it didnt happen all the time? (2) the parts needed lubricating. He told me what a no-no WD40 is and recommended SuperSlick. I also searched this forum and found similar product recommendations.
We actually had that happen the other day but it hasn't happened since. DH thinks that someone else was trying to open their garage door and somehow it affected ours. Don't know if that's true or if it could happen, but if so, maybe that's what is happening with yours.
My guess is that something is causing it to bind in the path ... whether it's in the opener or the door itself, that you'll have to find out.
Presuming it's a sectional door ...
With the garage door closed, disconnect the tram (emergency pull), and open the door manually. If it hard to lift, then you may be the torsion spring or cables; if it binds, there's an issue with the rollers or track. If it goes smoothly up and down and without much effort, then it's the opener.
