It also gets the porch rake on the house next door. Looking for spiders, believe it or not. This has been going on for the 23 years we've been in this house.
We have one, too. He's trying to attract mates, but it will make us a little crazy until he moves on. The worst house invaders we ever encountered were cliff swallows who built a dozen or so nests under eaves of our house. Because they are a protected species, we couldn't do a thing about it. Thank goodness the house was a rental!

It couldn't be the same woodpecker doing it for that long. They typically don't live beyond 10 or 11 years.

No it's not. But the succeeding generations have apparently discovered to fun.

It's spring time and they are looking for mates. There is one in my neighborhood who drills the metal light posts. I've noticed as I take my walks he follows me from pole to pole. I think he likes me.

My wood pecker starts at zero six hundred every morning, starting about the first week of March, ending in mid June.Works on my stainless steel chimney cap.Kinda sounds like getting strafed by the Red Baron.I deal with it by rationalizing that he has been doing his "thing",cruisin' for chicks that is,long before I was here, and hopefully will be doing it long after I'm gone!!!

Nah, I blame her mother.

What's funny, and I just found this out, is that said daughter is away at college and renting a house. Apparently at this house she has a woodpecker drilling the gutter right outside her room there, too.
