I am cold natured and want a warm retirement home.
Then buy a home that is well-insulated and reasonably air-tight with properly-installed windows and doors. There's no reason to think a cabin couldn't be built this way.
By "cabin" are you referring to a log cabin? The standard ones are difficult to heat, but you can get those with "double walls" that have insulation between. If it was to be used regularly in the winter in a cold climate, I'd go for double walls and lots of insulation -- either that or sheet rock interior walls with insulation behind it.
The main thing to remember- heat rises. So, the attic (or roof) is where you really want good R value.
