We bought a house last year with a sump pump in the basement. Today we have been getting torrential rains all day and I am hearing the sump pump click on. There is no water at all in the basement - the floor is completely dry. But when I look in the sump pump pit there is about 6 inches of water. When the pump clicks on the water goes out, and then it slowly rises again from the bottom up. Is this what is expected to happen during heavy rain? I always thought water would flow into the pump from the floor down into the pit. But in my case it looks like the water is actually rising from the bottom up. The top half of the pit is completely dry. If that's normal then I'm ok, I just want to make sure my sump pump outlet pipe is not clogged where the water can't get out, or if water is actually backing up into the pit through the pipe.
With all that rain, thats normal, the only thing you have to worry about is if the sump pump craps out, then your up the creek,I have two sumps with two pumps, just in case one gives out, and believe me they do, I had two give out at the same time, Thank God I can do plumbing work.If I were you, I would put another sump in with a back up pump.Call a good plumber and get some info.
