We are in the Process of Quoting our House and the "experts" can't agree. We did the research on the paint and we are using SW Duration but the experts are telling us 1 coat is good enough....no 2 coats...no 1.....and Hand painting is best....no Spray is better because more paint gets on the Hardiplank and with the nature of hardiplank that is what you want.... Any help would be appreciated....

What does James Hardie say about how their siding should be painted?
When in doubt go back to the manufacturer recommendations.
You will hear a lot of people tell you that brushing the exterior is the best and only way it should be painted. I have to disagree. Spraying is the only correct way to paint an exterior. My reasoning is brush stokes leaves ridges and valleys which are a perfect breeding ground for mildew. Spraying leaves a smooth finish which not only looks better but it also greatly reduces places for mildew to develop.
It looks to me as the manufacturer recomendation id for brushing and 2 coats. Do it right the first time and you will be happy with the results. Don;t try to skimp or do it the easy way. That will create more problems.
I get nervous when people say things like "the ONLY way to...".
Anyway, went to the hardie web site and here is what THEY say..."Yes, HardiePlank® lap siding must be painted or you may order many James Hardie® products with ColorPlus® Technology. If painting, 100% acrylic topcoats are recommended. Do not paint when wet. For specific recommendations, please refer to JH Technical Bulletin No. S-100 or refer to paint manufacturers specifications. Back rolling is recommended if the siding is sprayed. Within 180 days for primed product and 90 days for unprimed. DO NOT use stain or oil/alkyd base paints on James Hardie® products."
Looks like they seem to think that spray application is OK, as long as its back rolled.
I found that many painters spray, but do not get good coverage on the bottom edges of siding, or they get too much and get runs.
