It looks like from the picture that your owners manual is in that basket on the side of the furnace, is that true? If so, the information will be in there.

Those manuals that were left are the installation guides for installing the furnace, AC unit, etc and surprisingly don't have instructions as to where the filter goes. I think I've figured out that the filter goes behind a horizontal thin sheet of metal at the top of the unit (probably just out of range of the photo). The metal is held down by strong clips so I'm going to have to unscrew them.

Glad you finally found it! The manuals will be no help in locating filters, since they do not have a standard location, they only have to be on the return side of the air handler.

You want to be sure that you do not have wall filters in addition to the one at the air handler. Too many filters can cause air restriction and cause the unit to work too hard.

Did you check the return grills?

You said your father took care of them when you moved in. Have you called him and asked? (Dads usually like to answer questions like that, it gives us a sense of usefulness even after the kids have grown up)

Not a little off topic. It's called hijacking the thread.

OP: Since that pic doesn't show the return air duct, hard to say where the filter is. You would need to pan out on the pic and maybe show more than one side. Filter is normally right there at the furnace somewhere.

The problem is that the filter location is specific to the installation, not general to the furnace. The place it's located on this installation likely won't be where it's located on the same model in someone else's house.

They want to know where the OP's filter is located? Of course they do.

I have had houses where the filter was part of the furnace cabinet. In my present home the filter is mounted high on a wall and there is a duct pipe going from it to the furnace. Some say inexpensive filters work as well as expensive ones. With pets, replace in 1 to 3 months. No pets, one could go 3 to 6 months.
