Hi all,
I hope this is the right forum to post this on.
I am leaving a rental.
It has somewhat of a "sour" smell ... I don't know why.
I have a dog but i keep her very clean.
I've had a wood burning fire-place so maybe that has something to do with it.
What is the best product to use to eliminate odors without leaving a chemical / perfume smell?
I suppose i'd be using it on the carpet and the upholstery as well?
I'm not familiar with all of the various products so any input will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Febreze is all that comes to mind. But that leaves a fresh smell. Lysol spray will clean the air and kill germs. Try to find the source of the smell. If you can isolate the source, like the fireplace, spray just the fireplace or whatever the source. If you have carpet, spread carpet cleaner onto the carpets and vacuum off. That will leave a fresh smell. You can get carpet cleaning pwder with no scent. I'm out of ideas.

I did stick my head up the fireplace and it is the source of the smell so i think it's up to the landlords to clean it (which i'm thinking they haven't done in awhile) and i'm not sure that spraying stuff up there is the best idea.

General Cleanliness

Fresh Air (low moisture)

Sunshine

The Holy Trinity for funk-free living.

Those are the basics. For stubborn odors try baking soda. For pet-odors the enzymatic cleaners work really well.

good luck.

I'm generally quite clean.
I did discover that the particular sour smell is coming from the fireplace ... or i guess the chimney or flue? to be more accurate.
When i stick my head up there and sniff, i find that it's the source so i figure it's the homeowners, ie; the landlords responsibility to take care of it.

Let the LL know of the smell ahead of time to save being blamed for causing the smell. Make sure the LL knows the chimney needs cleaning.
