ADT Monitoring Service question (installed, light, company, ducts)

I'm going to buy a basic ADT system. Does ADT have a monitoring service itself or are you required to go through a local monitoring company that uses ADT equipment. I've noticed all these "free" ADT deals involve local companies. I've also noticed these local companies don't carry all the ADT products like their cameras. If anyone has an ADT system or knows about it, could you shed some light on this. Any and all responses are welcome! Thank You

I looked into ADT for our alarm system and discovered what manderly posted from their site. The alarm is sold, installed and serviced by a local ADT affiliat company. However, the monitoring is done through ADT itself at one of their command centers. So, you essentially buy the alarm third party, but it is monitored by ADT itself.
