We just moved over to Katy from England and find it very strange to have the masterbed downstairs leaving the children to sleep alone upstairs. It sounds like a great idea if your children are a bit older but mine is only 1,2 and 5 years old. I looked at quite a few single story homes to rent but either the backyard are too small or no pets allowed. We did find a 2 story we like ticking all the boxes but now wonder how do you sleep at night with the little ones upstairs by themself.

Video baby monitors.

Also, just because a house is one story does not mean that you will be close to the kids. Some of them have the master far on one side of the house and the other bedrooms on the other side.

Keep a long mop handle next you bed. When the kids make noise, bang the tip of the mop handle on the ceiling while yelling, "don't make me come up stairs!" Just kidding. A baby monitor would be the way to go.

Tripple T I struggled with this too when looking at homes to purchase. We don't have kids yet but will in a year or two.

It was very hard to find a home with even two bedrooms downstairs and most of those had the second bedroom right by the front door. We sucked it up and bought with 3 bedrooms upstairs and will have to use baby monitors to keep an eye on any future little ones.

We too will be moving into a large house with the master downstairs, we plan on using a baby monitor to listen out for our child.

I don't like the idea of being on a different floor from my young kids either. I personally don't like using monitors while I am sleeping because it picks up every little noise and can have interference noises too. Also, I don't want to go up and down stairs during the night to deal with infant feedings, illness, nightmares, etc. My oldest is 5 and I still think he is too young to be sleeping far away from us.

So you are not alone in having a concern about this. If you haven't rented/bought the house yet, maybe keep looking. It took awhile but we managed to find a house with all a master and two bedrooms all on one floor and this is a 3 story house!

When we were younger and we lived in a house with a layout like that; my mother was doing room checks like every other hour, especially at night. I'd be sleep and she'll come in there at like 3 in the morning. I was about 6 or 7 around this time.

We had this exact same problem. We searched and finally found a 2 story with all 4 bedrooms upstairs. I've heard that this can hurt our resale value, but it was just too important to me. We're from the northeast where master bedrooms down are not common at all, it seems strange to us. My kids were 1 and 3 when we moved in, and I love the choice we've made. I couldn't imagine trekking up and down the stairs in the night when they are sick, etc. Now maybe when they are 13 and 15 I'll change my mind!

Although I'm not a fan of houses with the master bed on the first floor or single story houses, look at the bright side in my house the master bed is upstairs and the other bedrooms are downstairs. There is always some positives.
