About to come to Houston for the weekend and looking for a good Japanese place that serves more authentic fare...I would LOVE some onigiri YUM!

The very best is Sage 400 Japanese Cuisine in the Galleria. They also happen to have won the top award for the best of the best food at the Houston Rodeo this past March. It's not cheap but ya get what ya pay for. Nothing in the Galleria area is cheap.

Nippon gets my vote. Had a classmate from Osaka, and he told me Nippon was very authentic. We didn't try Sage though, I'd like to try it myself.

Try Cafe Kubo's for traditional Japanese food. They have items like gyu don, tonkotsu ramen, curry and agedashi tofu. I don't think they have onigiri. Although they have sushi, it's not a sushi joint. There are no izakaya's in Houston.

Sage is younger, happy hour, bar/restaurant. Similar to Soma, Azuma, and Uptown. If you are going that route, I would suggest Aka Sushi. Although Soma's sushi list is rather extensive for Houston.

Toro Steakhouse is very good. It's located at 290 & FM 1960.

I think its much better than Benihana.

Nippon is authentic but I absolutely hate the people who work there...they are very racist. As soon as a party of Japanese people come in they have the mama of the house come in and the cook comes out and all the waiters are there entertaining them and the non-Japanese people have to wait 45 minutes for one order of sushi.

Happened multiple times to me and people I know who have gone there. I hope they go out of business. Their sushi is overpriced anyway.
