There are some very nice stores in Rice Village, River Oaks, Highland Village, Post Oak and Galleria. But more and more people choose to shop online...

It should be obvious why Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas have more upscale stores than Houston. Atlanta and Dallas have larger trade areas and Miami is where a lot of rich Yankees like to play.

People bash Houston for not being as upscale as the above cities. I think Houston has the economy, growth, and people to support more than one upscale mall. To add another point, Atlanta is booming with upscale malls (the future North Atlanta Center, the Streets of Buckhead, Midtown Mile along with Lenox Square, Phipps, and Perimeter). Is Houston going to have any luck? Are there any works for Houston to more upscale venues and malls?
Bloomingdale is way too expensive IMO. They have one at my local mall and I've never set foot in it again after that only one time. H&M is ok. Nordstrom is overly expensive. I second other posters. Keep the money is the way to go. That is why I only shop at those expensive places when they are on sale. You never know what you can find good deals amongst those clearance racks.

I think it has more to do with Houston's history. We're a working town. As we've grown we've added some nice amenities (luxury shopping included) but only as the demand for them has risen. I'm not saying that Dallas, Atlanta and Miami are cities of excess BUT Houston isn't. That said, Houston is attracting more and more people due to its strong economy. The more people (of higher earning potential) come, the more demand there will be for more upscale shopping. I give it a decade...

The clothes will go to the department stores like TJ Max, Ross and Marshalls after 6 months. So why should I shop at Neiman Marcus and Bloomingsdales?

Overall Houston people are less pretentious and more down-to-earth. Fewer people in Houston are trying to make themselves appear something they are not (i.e. $30,000 millionaires in Dallas - look it up) Besides Houston has more fortune 500 companies and probably has more foreign consulates than most of the other cities listed, so Houston doesn't really care about frilly fru-fru junk like that
