Zipcar is in a few cities like Atlanta and Austin. They are at Rice U, but only there and for their students, staff, and faculty. Zipcar doesn't think it would work in Houston in general though. But it would be a good alternative as Houston's mass transit is not built up enough.

All the cars would end up abandoned in Mexico.

I wonder how many of those cars are going to be stopped at the border full of drugs.

Houston as a little bit to go but once we have a decent mass transit this could work. If I was a young professional and talk the rail to work and needed a car every once a while this would be great.

There's something like a 50% tax. Zipcars are already expensive, plus add in that Harris County tax...

Zip and Go-Car work for my friends in Chicago. But we don't have enough density or mass transit to support such forms of complimentary transportation.

Not if you only need a car occasionally. You don't have to worry about gas, insurance, or maintenance. More convenient and flexible than a taxi and far less of a hassle than a rental.
