someone told me this when i was new here in houston. it's a short rain in a small area that quickly goes away and then pops up in another area. she said we call this _________ in texas.

Isolated thunder showers is what the weathermen call them so that's what I've always called them too. Of course in Houston they are more commonly called afternoon rain showers. The closeness to the ocean is usually what causes these & they mostly occur during the Summer months.

Troy Dungan, who was the bow-tied weatherman on Channel 8 for decades used that term, and it caught on there. I lived there for years. To me they'll always be "popcorn showers".
