[LEFT]Violent crimes in 2009 were down for the third straight year across the nation, but that was not the case in Houston, according to a report out Monday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Violent crimes in the Bayou City increased to 25,593, up 3.4 percent from 24,779 crimes in 2008. Property crimes jumped 9.2 percent to 120,933 from 110,759 in 2008, according to the FBI’s “Crime in the United States, 2009" report.
Over a five-year period of data available to the FBI, the number of violent crimes has steadily increased from 23,987 in 2005.
However, property crimes had risen from 120,425 in 2005, to 121,053 in 2006, and to 123,326 in 2007, before falling to the 110,759 figure in 2008, according to the data.
In Texas, there were 121,668 violent crimes and 995,145 property crimes committed in 2009.
Across the nation, there were 1.3 million violent crimes in 2009, an estimated 5.3 percent drop from 2008 figures, according to the FBI report. There were 9.3 million property crimes, down for a seventh straight year at an estimated decrease of 4.6 percent.

Notice that this is raw data based upon the notional number of crimes and not a "per capita" calculation. Given the steep decline in the economy nationwide, population growth in Houston is on a steeper curve. That said, increases in the notional number of crimes committed shouldn't surprise anyone.

There are three types of deception:

1. Lies
2. Damnable Lies
3. Statistics

Is it counted a crime before they find the body? Hmmm. Oh well off to Anahuac to see some gators.
