Was watching tv. All of sudden a strong oder came thru the house like a dead animal. Can smell it outside as well. What could it be??? Is our home on fire and we can not see it? Should we call 911 or will they think we are idiots or is there a gas leak outside???

if it smells like a dead animal, it may very well be one......if it's a gas leak, it will smell like rotten eggs.... where do you smell it at? certain areas of the house? certain areas outside the house ?

also, if you continue to smell it and suspect a gas leak,,,, don't call centerpoint energy from your house....step outside and call from your cell phone....

Did not want to call 911 and sound like an idiot so we called the fire dpt themselves to ask them their two cents. He said hang up and call 911 so we did. After vacating the house kiddos and furry kiddos I called back because it had been over 30 minutes and nobody had shown up yet. Showed a call was entered but they did not know anything so they linked up with the fire dpt and then the fire dpt told us what to do or not do in this case and that they were on their way.
Chief was first on scene and stuck head in front door and said yep something smells. It literally was an instant smell. If it had been a dead animal it would have been a gradual smell over time. Anyways, after gas masking up and checking everything out they went out back towards our fence line which backs up to a ditch and said they smelled something good back there and suspected a skunk was laughing hard at us. Constables stopped by and walked the ditch to ensure no dumping of dead bodies was going on. Nice thought. Glad it turned up negative.
Thanx for well wishes! Never had this happen before. Got the windows open and things are smelling like pumpkin candles right abt now!

Hmm, skunk spray and rotting meat are two very different smells.

There was a segment on the news the other night that stink bugs are popping up all over the place in the US - their map showed the coasts rather than Texas but it's just a thought. I wouldn't have thought it would be such a strong, sudden smell but then I have never had the misfortune to smell one.

Stink bugs are another entirely different smell also. Unforgettable when you retrieve one that dropped down your shirt and bit you.

Their stink doesn't radiate nearly as much as skunks or death.
