Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a preschool (4 year old) near San Felipe and Westheimer? Thanks for your help.

While I can't tell you any specific preschools, I suggest you visit any you find and look for:

1. A warm and caring staff
2. A ratio of 1 adult to every 10 children (8 is better).
3. A concentration on learning through play
4. Lots of books and several short (15 minute) story times rather than a long circle time
5. Lots of opportunities to write, but no pressure.
6. NAEYC accredition (this may be difficult since only a few preschools in Houston have it)
7. Lots of manipulatives, but not so many that it is overwhelming for the kids (it is better if the toys are rotated periodically rather than having everything out every day).
8. Lots of opportunities for creative art (easels should be standard equipment, but other things should be brought out like playdough and table top painting, marker, crayons, etc. It's even better if these are easily accessible for the kids to pull out on their own).

Good luck!

Absolutely. My son went there many years ago. Very loving environment, with a "stealth learning" agenda (they don't realize they're learning).

I'd avoid those montessori schools that have desks and makes kids sit at them for several hours a day, doing rote memorization exercises. Plenty of time for that when they enter kindergarten.

A rote memorization is not part of true Montessori curriculum. Also a true Montessori school is prefers to admit students who are under the age of 4.

Post Oak Montessori offers a wonderful early learning environment that is both exploratory a enriching.
