I could really use some direction/advice. I plan on moving to Houston from Philadelphia. I live in the University City section in Philly if anyone is familiar. I am looking from a a place to live that is hopefully similar. My biggest preference is to remain close to downtown Houston where I hope to be working. I do not really like having to commute and would prefer to walk to work or take transit. I have a wife and a three year old that I need to consider. I would like to buy in a range of $175k-$250k. I am willing to rent if need be to start out.

The only transit that is really worth noting in Houston is the light rail line which runs from downtown roughly parallel to Main Street southward, extending to just south of the 610 Loop near Reliant Stadium. Midtown and the Medical Center/Rice University area is probably your best bet.
