According to the wiki entry about her district, it is about 37% white, 40% black. She focuses strongly on race issues. How does she get 70%+ of the vote time and time again?

I have read some of her positions, seen some of her talks, and I find her ridiculous.

"Wiki entry..."

Well, there's the first problem with your numbers right there. But the district also has a large percentage of hispanics, making white the minority. Not hugely wealthy in many sections either, and also very democrat. Straight party line vote no matter how bad the politician...

the district is reliably democratic. they are going to vote for anyone with a D after the name.

I don't like her, my family and friends don't like her, in fact I have never met anyone who does like her.

I think she gets reelected for the same reason Perry gets elected.

Sheila pissed off a whole lot of black people in 2008, and still overwhelmingly won their vote that year.

Sheila's district is weirdly shaped to encompass many democratic pockets (thanks to the republicans). She will continue to win generals unless she is knocked out in the primaries because her district includes very democratic pockets including the heavily black 3rd ward, the bohemian Montrose, etc

hmmm, looks like it also includes the 5th ward. With a district like that, how can she lose?

Rather embarrasing for Houston, I'd say.

She needs to go. I'm a liberal, but she things she's done are just utterly embarrasing. She needs to get her act together. But she won't.

yeah, I agree. she won't because she keeps getting reelected by a large margin because of the gerrymandered district.

They basically lumped all the historically black hoods, and the qwirky hoods like the heights and montrose together to form her district.

There was another thread on this before, seems like the same ol' recurring theme keeps coming up.

I'm definitely a left of center person... but SJL has done some things in the past that have left me scratching my head. While I predominantly vote D, I don't vote straight-party, and have no problem voting against a dem I consider incompetent or self-serving.

For example, my Dem US Rep choice was Kesha Rogers... and after spending 5 mins researching her positions, I determined she was too bat **** crazy to vote for.

Same for me. I normally vote Dem but Kesha was one of the only ones I didn't vote for. It felt like she was saying anything to get elected. Her platform was to impeach Obama. Anyone with half a brain knows you can not impeach an elected office unless they commit a criminal offense. You may not like how he is leading the country but he has not done anything against the law.
