I may be moving to Houston and I'd like to know what areas to look in and what areas to avoid. I don't know yet where I would be working, but if I had my choice it would be nice to live in southeast Houston, which would be closest to the coast, since I would really enjoy an occasional excursion to the beach and I wouldn't have as far to drive there.

That would be Clear Lake.

You are going to find good and bad areas on all sides of Houston. It is advisable to live on the side of town closest to your job as houston is huge and commutes can be brutal. Clear Lake, Friendswood and League City are all nice areas on the SE side closest to the coast.

Yep Clear Lake, League City, Pearland/Friendswood. But first find out where you will work. Long commutes can be pretty stressful. Also depending on where you are from, you may or may not like Galveston beaches. It ain't all like the pictures on the internet.

Yep - that's certainly true - not to mention the additional insurance cost.

I've been looking at moving to League City and the additional insurance isn't really that much more than I am currently paying in Harris County - at least not enough to influence a decision on our part.

Yep, I enjoy the Clear Lake/Friendswood area. But if your work is in Woodlands, you'll be miserable. Galleria, probably okay.

Just an aside about the commute...

Even if you don't mind the drive, you may want to reconsider a long commute if you have kids. There's nothing worse than finding out your child needs you and then driving an hour plus in traffic to get to them.

Have a friend who works in the Galleria area - she just moved from Clear Lake to Woodlands - said the commute couldn't be any worse. ... She hates both commutes - says they are about equal in rush hour.
