I am planning on installing a modern wooden fence ( wooden boards going horizontal) next to my house. Do you think an HOA will have a problem with this?

I know I can easily contact them and all but I just wanted to know if this is a minor thing that I can just go ahead and do it without going through the whole hassle of asking for permission.

If you have standard strong-HOA restrictions, or an architectural control committee, they probably take issue with the design. Contact them first!

Yes, I agree - this is a major exterior change/improvement and they have to agree with the design and also the color, if you decide to paint it too.
Do other people have wooden fence as well?

1) Definitely contact your HOA. They usually have regulations concerning fences, and if you don't ask first, you may find yourself tearing it down.

2) What is a "modern wooden fence"? Modern compared to what? Don't 99% of fences have vertical boards?

Since horizontal boards are not real common, I would definitely check with your HOA. They can be really picky, and a major PITA if you don't toe the line.
