I'm sure you know that sap clogs the bottom of the tree after it's cut. You need to make a fresh cut, removing an inch or so from the bottom.

Fake Tree: I had one when I was younger and used it for about 5 years. But it didn't have a smell, looked fake, became an allergen with dust and just looked ratty after year 3.
Afghan Pine, Leyland Cypress, Arizona Blue Cypress, and Carolina Sapphire are pretty much your choices

I usually buy from Home Depot. I was a little late this year, but I bought ours last week and it is doing great. I've never really had a problem with them lasting through the season and I almost always get them from Home Depot.

I also agree with the previous poster who suggested you make a fresh cut. I usually do that about half-way through the season.

No, we were planning to cut our own, but then happened by the trees available at the local plaza....DH was like "oooh, these are nice!" "oooh, these are a good size", "oooh, they're *right here* we could have it up by tonight...wouldn't you like that, kids?!?" So, yea, we got our tree at Kroger. LOL. And, it's a Douglas fir. I much prefer the Noble firs for their individuated branch style and needle retention. I've never had a Douglas fir that didn't shed all.season.long. And this one is noooo different. Thankfully it still looks lush, but I'm worried about it getting too dry in some spots, already.

Just curious.....how do you make a fresh cut mid-way through the season?? Do you mean even after it's already decorated?? Or are you setting up your tree half-way through the season and then decorating it? I'm just asking b/c we always make a fresh cut right when we set up the tree in its stand with plenty of water. This tree doesn't seem to be "drinking" much water so I'm wondering if it could use another cut, but just don't see how that's do-able w/o a colossal mess of lights and ornaments.

LOL - "...wouldn't you like that, kids?!?" - perfect question to ask the kids so HE can get what he wants. Slick T.

I'm with you on the look of Noble Firs.

I was wondering the same thing about the fresh cut mid-way through the season. There is NO way I'd even think about doing that what with all the ornaments, lights & how we batten down our tree to prevent tipping.

BTW - they did do a fresh cut for us before putting it in the stand.
