Hey guys,

I was considering relocating to Houston for work, I work in the downstream oil biz (refining/engineering) - I was just wondering if anyone down in Houston knows anything about Houston's economy, and if it's poised to grow in the energy sector, with an emphasis on the downstream refining (engineering) side? Any thoughts?

Oil and NG prices are both good and rising which is always good news for Houston.

Can someone explain those terms to me - upstream and downstream?

My son is a chem E, so I suppose I could ask him, but I am interested in what they are.

Here is the simple version:
Upstream is exploration and production, basically finding the oil and getting rigs up and oil into the pipeline. A drilling engineer would be upstream as would a geologist. Downstream is what they do with it after it is produced. So your son would be downstream because the chemical engineering applies to goods that they make with oil is my understanding.

hmm not exactly correct..

the upstream that is hiring right now in houston is OFFSHORE.. any engineer (chemical, structural, mechanical, etc..) that has offshore experience is in demand right now..

downstream is onshore..

Take a look at Rigzone.com. I don't believe they are Houston specific, but they have tons of O&G job postings and can give you a quick idea of what's out there. Keep in mind, the real number of jobs available is going to be far greater, as most jobs never get posted (and tend to be filled via networking).

Houston's economy is doing comparatively well right now, and the energy sector is a big reason (though not the only reason) for that. How the sector grows over the next few decades is anyone's guess, but the need for energy is NOT going away. As the world continues to globalize and the developing countries demand more energy, the sector will continue to grow. As the sector grows, Houston's economy will also (though it is much more diverse than most people realize!)
