My family will be spending 10 weeks in Houston this summer for my husband's job. I will be 25 weeks pregnant when we arrive and 35 weeks when we leave. We plan to return to Illinois before delivery, but I will need to have at least 2 pre-natal visits while in Houston. We have Medicaid (in Illinois), so my understanding is that we're not eligible for any free clinics. Does anyone have any ideas of people/places I could contact about pre-natal visits?

you can go to any Federally Qualified Health Center in Houston and they will see you. These are non-profit clinics that do receive limited federal funds to operate. However, the bulk of their funds are from charitable donations, grants, and insurers. You will be asked to complete some forms (financial eligibility), and you will be assessed a fee based on a sliding scale. They are very reasonable. Many clinics charge $20 a visit.

St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities hosts a wonderful website that lets you find services in your zip code -- Project Safety Net (http://www.slehc.org/CHI/CHIS/PSN/Index.cfm - broken link). It'll even map it out for you. Good luck.

you could go to LBJ or Ben Taub and be seen. they are the community hospitals.

you are eligible for free clinics here, but your IL medicaid is not the same as Texas, which you know. you could transfer your medicaid. i wouldnt suggest this as it is a lot of work for not much gain

i'd recommend the community hospitals over a free clinic, unless you find a private doctor that does sliding scale.

Call Dr. Johnson & see if they can work with you. Otherwise, testmo is right on.

Ben Taub and LBJ are part of the county public hospital system. They are tax-payer funded, and provide care to residents of the county. If you are not a resident of Harris County, it will cost more. They will see you, but they will charge you more.

Also, if the OP is wanting a prenatal visit, I wouldn't go to a hospital. A clinic is much faster, hence the suggestion to go to the FQHC clinic in her area.
