Hi,

I am looking for a nice little town to start over with my kids. A few people have told me to look at The Woodlands. I was wondering if there are any Pros/Cons about the area that I should know about before coming from out of state to take a look. Are there areas to stay away from? What about the schools (TWCP) & hospitals in the area, good/bad? I have been doing some research and it looks like there are a bunch of things for the kids to do. (ages 10-17)

Thanks,
Danni

It's very very far away from most employment centers in Houston. But if you are working up there it's not a problem. It's a nice, typical planned community. Schools are your average public education. Nothing special, but much more "safe" than more inner city schools. They get good ratings because of attendance and the passing of a the VERY basic TAKS test. 1/4 of the price for a house than better neighborhoods in Houston.

Tons of things for little kids to do, not much other than school sports and the mall for teens.

Hell of a drive anywhere into central Houston though.

Uh, yeah it is actually. It's just more Latin than Asian, which you seem focused on soley.

Not as "diverse" as Sugarland, but more so than certain parts of Houston Central that I know.

Are you joking? Sugar Land's Fort Bend county is the 3rd diverse county in the USA.

I would not be working in Houston, but would like to go into the city every now and then with the kids. Is the traffic bumper to bumper as it is in Austin? I don't mind driving as long as it is moving. The drive for me right now is 30 minutes each way and that is for everything, doctors, shopping etc,.

youll have doctors, shopping etc in the woodlands. driving into the city would be way over 30 minutes though

and i think overall austin traffic is worse. houston has more traffic, but is not as stop and go. going up 45 though can be like that and thats what youd be taking to get to the woodlands (i am not so familiar with the toll roads)

To the OP, if you work in the area, there is no reason to leave it unless you just want to. Trips to downtown would be for the museums, zoo, etc. Just go during a non-rush hour period. The Woodlands has everything in the area.
