Transferring to Houston (Pasadena, The Woodlands, Pearland: apartments, countertops, appliances)

Hi!

We are transferring to Houston (yay! I'm coming back!)! My fiance got a job that's in Deer Park, and I'm transferring grad schools (hopefully). My family lives in The Woodlands, but I haven't lived there in 5+ years, so my knowledge of the Houston area is lacking. We don't want to live in The Woodlands (well, at least not while we don't have children).

My fiance doesn't want to commute at all (he's from a little small town, so I don't think he really understands yet that commuting is going to happen regardless), and I don't mind commuting some, but I don't know how I feel about living in Deer Park. He wants to live somewhere basically brand new (granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, hardwood/tile floors throughout, etc.) and for <$1100/month (preferably less than $1000/month for a 1b/1ba). I'd ideally like to live in the Rice Military/Montrose/Memorial area, but I realize that this may not be a possibility ($$), and he is not fond of living in that area because of the commute right now.

Do y'all have any advice on areas to live in? He'd ideally like east of 45. We will NOT live in the hood, it's not even an option, so please let me know what areas are good and which ones are not.

What about the Clear Lake area? Close to entertainment and the water. Commute won't be bad.

A commute is going to exist if you don't want to live in Deer Park, but it doesn't have to be horrible, like it would coming from Memorial area or Montrose.

I don't know anything about the Deer Park area, but I know that if we lived there, I'd be the one having to commute into Houston every day and it would be MISERABLE. I feel that if we live closer to Houston (even in Memorial or Montrose) that his commute to Deer Park wouldn't be that bad because he's going away from Houston.

As for Clear Lake, that's a little farther that I want to be. I'd possibly live in Pearland, but I want to be as close to Houston as I can be.

The commute from Memorial to Deer Park would be miserable. I did the commute from Montrose to Pasadena for many years, it is not really that bad because you are going against traffic.

Pearland is farther than Clear Lake technically speaking.

Deer Park to Houston, I assume you will be going to one of the colleges, is not as bad as most of the other commutes, but it is not great either.

If he wants to be close to Deer Park, you might consider some of the newer apartments along Fairmont Parkway.

Well that wipes out most of the areas I know anything about.

Hi, the northeast Houston area Humble/Kingwood might be an option. It would be an easy commute around beltway 8. The corridor around the northend of Beltway 8 is growing as well.
