I'm a new transplant to Houston from out of state. My job is right near 290 and 34th. I found a townhouse nearby that will be a short commute if I take it. The neighborhood looks a little lower-class but is clean and appears to be mostly families. I'll be living in Houston alone for a few months until my wife gets the house sold and such. The place is a little more than I wanted to spend, but that's because I was looking at 1/1 or 1/1.5 apartments and this is a 3/2 unit for $800.

Things can be replaced, and I'm a pretty big and mean-looking guy. I'm not a Marine though and although I can sometimes be as mean as I look I'm not looking to have to defend myself. According to the statistics I've seen Houston as a whole has about the property crime I'm used to in my small town back home, but about four times as much violent crime per person.

So a Neighborhood Scout crime score of under 50 doesn't really scare me the way it does some people. Our house in Illinois is in a 24. I grew up in a neighborhood that is a 7, although it was probably a littler better then. The neighborhood I'm looking at is a 17, but it's for just me and just temporarily until we sell our house and my wife moves here.

I thought I'd ask around about it, though, since people are sometimes better at pointing out specific problems than the numbers. Is this a good find for me, or should I be wary of the neighborhood? Is there anywhere decent within a short commute other than the pricey houses in Oak Forest?

What is the name of the townhomes? Where is it? If it is on DeSoto or Sherwood Forest - the answer is NOOOOOOO!

Default not at all...

This is a little 3-unit building. It's not one of the giant complexes with a name.
