I'd recommend Buchanan's nursery in the Heights. Very knowledgeable. Native plants.

I think a couple stone soldiers from Forbidden gardens would be cool.

There is nursery off I-10 near Westgreen or Fry. I can't think of the name. I think it is Houston Plants & Gardening World.

I also go to Corneilus (they have a location of I-10 on Dairy Ashford).

Lastly, There is Bray's Bayou Nursery off Wespark Tollway and Eldridge.

Do not buy from Houston Garden Center. Lowes has very good suppliers and they stand by their 1 year guarantee--just hold on to the receipt and container.
Those are all good choices for Houston. Another one that we had great luck with and actually is native to the area are yaupon hollies.

We always went to both of those places. The lady who was the manager at the Houston Plant World, or whatever it was called, was always very helpful, but my guess is she's probably not there anymore.

Corneilus is also a great place to go to ask questions. Sometimes their prices are higher, but, if you don't know what you're doing, you're not only paying for the plants but the info. Also we always found great sales on plants at the Lowes at I-10 and Fry. According to a relative that works for the company, each store manager has some leeway with marking items down. That particular store always seemed to have the best plant sales.

I know exactly where you are talking about.
I used to live in the apartments right there.
We will go by there and take a look.
Thanks.

Be VERY careful with Sago Palms if you have pets. They are deadly if eaten by dogs. They will quite literally kill your dog if he eats the leaves or any part of the plant.

I have to agree with the Japanese Boxwoods. They're hard little suckers!

I know everyone said not to, but we ended up getting almost all of our plants from Houston Garden Center today.
We first went to Houston Plants & Gardening World on I-10 b/w Fry and Westgreen.
The selection there was okay, but there was no one there to help us and it was cold and rainy so we left after a while.
We then went to Lowe's. However, we were not impressed with the selection there.
We did pick up a couple of sago palms there.
We finally decided to go the Houston Garden Center and loved the selection there.
I'm not sure why so many people here are down on HGC.
The prices were for the most part cheaper than the other 2 places we went to.
Add to that, we found a coupon there that saved us 20% off our total cost.
We picked up knockout roses, Japanese boxwoods and a few other plants (can't remember the names anymore).
Thanks to everyone here for their help.

Good for you!

I'm not down on HGC, I go there all the time---just recommended one of the others (more expensive) because their staff is a bit more knowledgeable.

Good luck!
