This is something I've wondered for a long time. Why is it that the Beltway 8 in Northeast Houston is still not a controlled access tollway? It seems that Houston grows in every direction, except to the Northeast. There is a lot of empty land between say the outskirts of the city limits (Mt. Houston Rd) and Lake Houston. It's like Houston is a giant pie with a giant piece in the Northeast section cut out...

It's been something that I've been curious about for years. They are no further along in converting that section to a tollway than they were 15 years ago.

You are welcome. Cbach my friend, that is a question that deserves a good answer. The official answer was that the area could not support a tolled facility at the original time of development. Okay, then why not develop an actual "Freeway"?!

Agree, the official answer leaves much to be desired. To me Houston would be wise to promote growth in that area. It's very close to the airport and closer to downtown than a good deal of the metro (well anything outside of Beltway 8). Instead of endless sprawl to the North, Northwest, West, and Southeast, this would be infill growth, and there would be northeastern limits because of Lake Houston.

Did they forget to bank this one too and use defective concrete like they did on westpark tollway?
