I've always been of the opinion that you should have a job line up before you make a move. With that being said, I was recently told that so many companies in Houston are anti-relo right now, they won't even consider an out of area resume'. (even if you'd move yourself).

So I guess it may not be so bad to move even if you don't have a job lined up? I'm not sure I'd leave a job if you have one.

Do you think $50,000 is enough to support a family of 4 and move to Houston? I mean while looking for a job. So, lets say it took me 6 months to get a job, would that money last me 6 months?

So, if I have a PO Box, I will have a better chance of getting calls or interview? Right now no ones calling because of my out of state address.

You have plenty of money. However, rent a small apartment in the central west area of town, on a short term lease until you get jobs squared away and see where to move on a more permanant basis. There is no point in spending a lot of money just getting set up.

We packed all of our stuff up and come on down. Neither of use had jobs. However, we have family here to stay with until we got jobs. My spouse got offered a teaching position within a month of being down here. I started my new job within 45-50 days of being down here.

So, it is possible, but we had left jobs up north to move down and weren't worried about getting new positions because we both had marketable skills.

Make a budget of what you think your expenses are going to be on a monthly basis. Use an average number and then use highest possible numbers. That will give you a pretty good idea of how long 50k will last.

To have 50K last 6 months you'll have to live on 8,300 or less a month. Which is entirely possible down here.

So, the answer is doable.. Do you think I can rent a place in Sugarland or katy area that will fit a family of 4 for $1000/month?

In upper Katy. However, I still think it would be a better idea to rent a 2 bedroom, short-term lease in an apartment community in west Houston, while you get jobs lined up. Pack up the majority of stuff in a pod and have it moved down here, waiting for the permanent place.

Houston is huge - you cannot begin to guess where you need to live, on a more permanent basis, until jobs determine where that will be. Please don't under-estimate the size of this city. You do not want a 3 hour+ total commute everyday.

Are your kids school-age? If so, it will be a little disruptive to do it that way if you move before summer - but still better in the long run.
