I am driving from Austin to Pensacola tomorrow. If I leave Austin at 4AM I think I should clear Houston by 7AM. Will that be soon enough to miss rush hour?

If I get a later start and hit rush hour anyway, is it better to grin and bear it straight through on I-10, or is there a better circuitous route?

I could also come in from Hwy 290 and cut across on 610 to I-10. Would that be better than taking Hwy 71 to I-10?

Thanks

Steve

Rush hour hits hard around 7am. I'd leave Austin around 3AM or wait until 7:30-8. Definitely Take 71 to I-10.

I'm not sure it's full rush hour congestion at 7am on IH10, but it's definitely on by 7:30 . I always thought at 7am, you have heavy but moving traffic on IH10 (different story if it's I45 or 290),it will still slow you down regardless. So ideally you should go earlier and at the very latest, hit downtown by 7am. If you're still in West Houston/Katy at 7am, forget it. BTW, since it's spring break and the kids are out of school, traffic is alot lighter than usual so maybe you'll be ok regardless.

Take 71 to I-10. The 610 loop gets congested fast and 290 is our worst spoke. I think if you arrive in Katy around 6:30 am you should get through Houston pretty quick going East on I-10.

Not sure if you have an Austin toll tag, but I'm pretty sure they work with the EZ Tag network. The Katy Tollway will make the commute much quicker. If you have a passenger (or is it 2 at that time?) you will be able to use it at no cost.

It's Spring Break this week, so rush hour is almost non-existant. Avoid getting to downtown around 7:45-8:15 and you'll barely notice any traffic.

Followup:

I took I-10 straight through. Hit Katy at 6AM and cleared 610 Loop east of Houston by 6:40AM.

It was thick already but mostly averaged 70 mph.
