Is Memorial to that area an impossible commute? Not sure of traffic in Houston....

Any other ideas? Schools important (public and private) and 500-700K for housing budget.

It wouldn't be impossible - the east part of Memorial (near the Kincaid school) would be the loop to 45 and south - or I-10 to 45 and south - depending which you were closer.

Sugar Land would be quicker, via the Beltway.

Another option is the Meyerland area.

Check out Garden Villas Telephone & Airport you can get a nice size home on a 3/4 acre lot for around $200k & then use the rest of the money to remodel the home only 1.5 mile from Hobby

Pearland, Friendswood, Clear Lake all have neighborhoods in that range and you can potentially drive to Hobby area without ever touching a freeway.

what about Pearland. Head straight up Telephone road from the east side of town.

Memorial is great but some of the suburban choices like Friendswood, Clear Lake or Pearland would be worth investigating. I second Meyerland as an option as well as some of the inner loop Braeswood areas.

If I could spend $700,000 though, I would be all piled up somewhere in the 77005 zip. Center of everything, one of the prettiest parts of Houston, fairly easy commute to Hobby. $700k however, doesn't exactly go as far there as other places.

I work near Hobby, and live in 77005. It's a great commute, easy driving (most of the time). But you're correct; 700K ain't what it used to be.

Depends on what you want. If suburbia calls then head out to pearland/clearlake/friendswood as people suggest.

Although prices in West University (77005) have softened, 700k is still at the cusp of providing what most people would consider is a comfortable house.

For 700K, I recommend the Southhampton or Southgate neighborhoods that are on the north & south sides of Rice University (respectively). You can get everything from a completely renovated older home to a slightly dated 10-20 year old home for that price. Southgate also has the benefit of relatively easier access to 610/59 than the other neighborhoods mentioned above coupled with walking access to Rice Village and Rice Track.

It wouldn't be all that bad. You could go all along 45 there nearly till Texas City and still keep your commute under an 45 minutes.

This plus-

$500-700k would set you up with a 3500-4500 sq ft home in Bay Oaks, premier neighborhood in the Clear Lake area.

I-45, exit 29 and east for a few miles. I'd definitely use a freeway to Hobby. From there would be about 15-25 minutes commute each way depending on time of day.
