What do you call Houston and all the areas around it? Houston Area? Greater Houston? (Austin: live, metro)

I just call it Houston. I'll tell someone I meet I'm from Houston and the usual reply is "Oh, Houston. What part?" and I answer.

The same with everyone else I know or here. I'm from West Houston around Memorial. "Oh."

I'm from the Southeast side near Clear Lake. "Oh."

Most Texans and LA people I run into know how widespread Houston is so they know to ask what part.

When outside the Houston Metro area, it's a plain and simple "Houston". When in the Metro area, you refer to your specific town, city or hood.

Related to this, do you guys consider Houston as part of South Texas, East Texas or neither? I've never known how quite to classify it in this regard. On the map, it's obviously Southeast Texas but I don't really hear anyone use the phrase "Southeast Texas" much.

There's South Texas but I thought of that as more Corpus Christi down to the Rio Grande Valley. Austin and San Antonio I see as Central Texas. El Paso is, obviously, West Texas. Dallas-Fort Worth is North Texas (though that term seems manufactured to me, physically it's more Northeast Texas). With Houston, I always see it referred to as just Houston, Greater Houston area, metro Houston, etc., as stated here, but less so as part of a region like "South Texas," "North Texas," "East Texas," etc.

Growing up in LA, I liked terms like "Southland" and "Inland Empire." They may have been marketing gimmicks but they have a grandness about them I always found amusing.
