As far as Mexican food - IMO, Lupe's Tortillas is great, especially their charro beans that come free with chips and salsa. Pappasito's has the best chips and salsa IMHO.

I agree with the above comments about avoiding the commute and renting in West U area or Southgate area. You'll be in the Rice U area (Southgate) or to the west of Rice and right down the street (West University Place) and can avoid the commute in on a freeway. Another option might be Braes Heights, which is just to the south of Rice, bordering the Texas Medical Center. Living in any of these areas, you will be close to Rice Village, where there are many shops and restaurants. you can search easily online at HAR.com : Houston Real estate, Houston homes, Houston Realtors, TX Homes (Houston Area Realtors, I think) to see homes for sale or rent in MLS. Use the search box, subdivision and type in West University, etc. or use the map to zero in on an area inside the 610 loop. Good luck!

We're moving to Houston this summer and although we're very confident we're moving to the right neighbourhood we're renting first if only to get to know that neighbourhood better. In any city, one block away can make a big difference in perceived value, it helps to know where the cut through streets are too. This is something difficult to get until you're 'on the ground' for awhile. I also agree with the other posters, wait until school is over and the full time jobs are all sorted out.

I agree with the renting advice. Further... I would consider an apartment. The houses in some of the areas that have been mentioned are going to be AT LEAST 2-3K a month or more to rent. There are very nice apts within a 5-10 minute drive that can be had for $1200 or so, depending on your desires (newer, older, etc).

With an apt, you won't be spending time mowing, watering, etc. And you can learn the city, and decide what you REALLY want to do after a year.
