@ ethanw - Thanks for the info! I noted the info. For your friend's sake, you may wanna take her personal info off the forum, though. She will probably start getting lots of spam mail and phone calls!

@ testmo - Thanks for that advice, testmo! I will definitely look into that! As for what type of testing he has gone thru, in all honesty none...just a gut feeling that he is just a slow developer, but I know....you never really know....

@ pegotty - I understand what you're saying. Trust me, we won't shove anything down his throat. He is actually eager to learn and improve. He doesn't want to be picked on at school, and I know there is no way he will pass next year w/o improvement. I want to try something....at least to know we gave it a shot. I will check out that book you mentioned, though! Thanks!

@ westres1 - thanks....I will read about them too!

@ azamsharp - No I haven't....will do so! Thanks!

I would not recommend Sylvan or Huntington Learning Centers, I didn't like the instruction they provided and it didn't help me improve my grades.

What I recommend is talking to a teacher or a learning/education specialist as they may have a better idea as to what needs to be done in order to bring your nephew up to speed.

This may or may not help, but how about going to the University of Houston, Rice, or if possible UT Austin and speaking with professors that are in the education department.

UT Austin has an elementary school (so does UH, a charter school) and professors do extensive research on education and development so they may be able to suggest some ideas to help your nephew.

Hope everything works out for your nephew!

My hubby has a PhD in educational philosophy from one of the top universities in the US. He would agree with all the things I said in my post. As a matter of fact, we had the same issues with my nephew (and my son at the same time) and my sister came to us asking for advice. She chose to disregard our advice and things have NOT improved for them over the last three years. I am very pleased with our results. Of course, children are individuals and there can be a myriad of issues. It's not always an easy fix.
