I would recommend the Aquarium as well. There are rides and snack foods. The restaurant itself ain't cheap though. I dropped $81 for me, my wife and 2 year old.

How about that restaurant at Discovery Green?
Here is a coupon to help make the Aquarium more affordable. Buy one get one for the all day passes for all the rides. The pass is 15.95 a person so this cuts it down to $8. My kids love the aquarium and the rides.

Niko Niko's

There is also a Chinese joint on Travis and Franklin I believe. Market Square wouldn't be a bad place either.

The op said utilizing light rail - so kid friendly downtown I would say Niko Niko's in Market Square, Treebeards (if they are open - call first), Spaghetti Warehouse on Commerce, the hot dog/burger place at Discovery Green (not the upscale restaurant Grove). These are all ones that I would consider kid-friendly in the downtown area and accessible from light rail.

I agree with the posts about Downtown Aquarium. We took some kids there and they all had a blast! The rides were and the aquarium exhibit is really great for kids. The food is pretty decent if not a tad pricey but my kids enjoyed it nevertheless! Great place!
