I just got the offical news today that I will be relocating for work to Houston from Chicago the last week of June. Need to start looking for housing ASAP, but no clue where to live. I will be working downtown on Fannin. Commute time is a big thing for me. I currently have a 45 minute commute and do not want anything longer than that down there if possible. From my search on Realtor/Craigslist it appears that for the most part I can rent in any suburb for what I pay here so price doesn't seem to be a factor in choosing a location. I do have school age children so schools are important. I also would like a diverse area as we are a mixed race (white/black) family and don't want any of my kids feeling like a minority compared to their brothers and sisters. Ideally I'd like to live within Houston to have a shorter commute, but have getting mixed opions on that. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!

First off, welcome to Houston!! You will absolutely love it here! If you are working on Fannin, I would suggest living in Sugar Land or Missouri City. Both are very safe suburbs, family oriented, close proximity to the inner southwest Houston area and both very diverse areas especially Missouri City. Speaking of diversity, Houston is extremely diverse and really a huge cultural melting pot. From Sugar Land and Missouri City you can hop on US-90A in the morning and be right at IH-610 and US-90A in about 20-ish minutes. Now Fannin is a long street so depending where on Fanning you are working your commute could be 20-40 minutes. The good news is if you are working in downtown or the Texas Medical Center you can catch the light rail into both areas and save time and money on parking.

I will make the requisite plug for NOT going out to the burbs... ask your realtor to show you something in 77096/77035 (Meyerland area, lots of nice subdivisions within that, like Parkwest, Maplewood South). Great houses, suburban feel, but much closer to where you'll be working, and also museums, concert venues, shopping, restaurants. Unless you like chain restaurants, in which case you'll find plenty in Sugar Land or any other suburb. But seriously, Houston has some of the best restaurants in the country, including low-price ethnic food... why miss all that by being in the burbs. JMHO.

This area has nice diversity (black, white, hispanic, Catholic, Jewish, "Christian" of other sorts, gay, straight...).

Just check that you're zoned to a good elementary/middle (use this School Zone Search Tool). Look for Parker, Kolter, Herod for K-5, Johnston for middle school. High school is an issue but there are magnet and private options.

Sugar Land is nice, I'm not knocking it. But look at both, do the commute from both locations at the time you'd be commuting, and make an informed decision.
