From an outsider's perspective it is interesting that UH hired a guy that has gotten two major programs in trouble with the NCAA. His record speaks for itself though. Probably worth it for a program that only made NCAA tourney once in the last 20 years to take a gamble on a guy known for cheating.

He made excessive phone calls, which is actually not considered cheating anymore.

UT and Baylor, yes Baylor are light years ahead of UH in terms of basketball. Schools like that cheat all the time. Plus they have $$$. UH does not have $$$. Under normal circumstances there is no way UH could land a coach with his credentials. But UH sees this as a chance to compete with the big boys (which UH once was) and gain some street cred in the AAC (which has a team in the final four that UH beat during the regular season). Stop and think about it - how else would they be able to convince a recruit to choose UH over UT? Yes this could backfire, but with a strapped budget, this is a gamble that could pay off really big.

Given the circumstances, this is the best possible choice.

Considering that its U of H, its a great hire. Sampson has had success every school he's coached at including taking Oklahoma(Oklahoma!) to a final four. If he can tap into the Houston high school/AAU talent(and there is A LOT of talent in this area) then U of H should be a consistent tournament team.

The stuff he got into trouble for are now legal. Calling/texting as much as you want is now leagl. Even the NCAA realized that was a stupid rule.

Yes, it is completely OK that he was breaking rules now they are no longer rules.

My oh my, what hyperbole you have chosen to use... It comes off as very dramatic.

I think it is highly appropriate to bring up the fact he got not one, but TWO programs in trouble for breaking rules/cheating. Fact is, he did break the rules. Also very appropriate to point out that absolutly zero top programs have snapped up Kelvin Sampson since he parted ways from IU. But I guess it is OK since the rule is "dumb."

Looks like a good hire. I'd like to see UH get at least some of their old basketball swagger back.
