Bare boned budget and cuts to education and infrastructure = short term success but long term collapse.

I'm all for low taxes, but there has to be a happy medium where we don't have total collapse of infrastructure because of no funds to maintain roads or have no educated work force because of an inadequate education system.

There would be plenty of money for education, military and infrastructure if it weren't for special interests. In fact, that's all the government should be responsible for. Not turtle bridges and water diversion for minnows.

Sorry for the OT.

Good point. And I'm not saying that a periodic purge to cut some of the fluff in education is bad thing. I just think that a totally bare-bones budget can't be sustained long-term.

Actually, it really just boils down to corrupt politicians and taxation.

Years ago, they sold us on the lottery under the guise that the profits would go to the educational system here in Texas. Well they lived up to their part of the bargain. The funds did indeed go to the educational system. But that allowed them to take the money that would normally go to education and spend it on their (the politicians) favorite programs.

In other words, we assumed that the lottery would bring extra money to improve education here in Texas by adding to the existing funds. But they diverted the traditional funding to other things. We got hoodwinked.

Now over the last 15-20 years, many corporations have been relocating here to get away from taxes and labor unions in other states. Ironically, liberals from these other states are moving here to get the jobs that they supported taxing out of business in their home states. They'll just vote pro-tax or pro-labor union here and screw up Texas like they did California and Michigan (and various other states).

The lottery was a dumb idea. I do think casinos would work but Texas would rather collect money (lottery) and never have people win over casinos where money changes hands over and over (people actually win even a few hundred dollars). All the cars in LA casino parking lots are from Texas anyway.
