I'm trying to find a 3 bedroom apartment really in any part of the city but prefer to be around 30-45 minutes outside of downtown below $800 a month in a decent neighborhood, I've been looking and found probably atleast 100 buildings that match my criteria only to go to apartmentratings.com and see that 9 out of 10 have horrible ratings.

The ones that do have decent ratings are always listed as income restricted.

Any suggestions ?

Go farther out or go closer in. 30-45 minutes kinda puts you in no-man's land in certain directions.

But in general 800 a month for a 3 bedroom is kinda low for a safe area anywhere in the metro. You may want to crush into a 2 bedroom.

$800 would be for a good 1/1 bedroom... maybe a 2/2 but that's really, really pushing it. 3 bedroom? Start at $1200/mo and work up from there.

Interestingly enough, we blew off moving back to Florida because the only 3 bedroom places we could find were over $1,000 a month...

Rents are going up in Houston. Many burbs are getting hit by foreclosures and the residents have to live somewhere.

Well I haven't been in an apartment for awhile, but it seems that the jump from a 1/1 to a 2/2 isn't all that large, but going from a 2/2 to a 3/2 is a much bigger leap in cost. Enough that you'll be better off renting a older house.

Ashley apartments, Cornerstone Ranch (Owned by the same company) are pretty nice but I cannot vouch for the new management. We had a pretty good experience with Ashley House.

Both are located in Katy on South Mason Rd.

If you can spend another couple hundred dollars why don't you rent a house instead? We are paying 1150 for a 3 bedroom house. Think of all the extra space you would have.

If you're looking for one bedroom or even two, you've got loads of affordable options. Three bedrooms gets expensive. There are a lot of apartments in Houston, but not every one has three bedrooms. And those are the ones that are getting jacked up the most from the subprime fallout. Definitely look at rental houses. You might find something in North Westbury, but look on HAR.com....
