Hello Houston, My family and I are considering to move to Texas with the next year or so. I would like to know the difference between Dallas vs. Houston and which one of those cities is a better location to move to. Here is what I'm looking for:

1. Job Market:

First off, how is the job market in general? I'm working on my degree in both video production and graphic design. My mom is in the banking industry and has her real estate licsence and my brother is into the music scene and visual arts. Does Houston or Dallas have a Job market for all these things?

2. Which city supports the Arts more? This includes visual arts, music and film

3. Which city has better opportunity for starting a business?

4. Which city is better where cost of living is concerned, especially home prices?

5. Which city has better weather?

I know both cities are hot, but which one is more manageable?

6. Which city has the worst crime?

7. Which city has the best entertainment and more things to do leisure wise?

8. Which city is popular with celebrities?

9. Which city has a more diverse population and diverse culture?

10. Which city has better school districts?

Can't answer all of em, but for a few.....

5. The Weather. Both have some pretty rough weather if you are not used to it. Houston is 'cooler' (on the thermometer) but with a higher humidity (by far). Dallas will have 'hotter' temperatures in the summer with lower humidity, and will be much colder in the winter. Houston rarely freezes, but there will be quite a few cold spells in Dallas.

6. Houston, probably, right now. But most crime can be avoided by your housing choices...

8. I do not know, but I would guess Dallas is more of a celebrity city....but it all depends on the celebrity.

There are some very subjective questions you have there, too . In generally, Dallas is more of a 'dress-up' city, while Houston is more of a 'casual' city.

Both have good and bad school areas. Both have very strong economies, but it depends on the area you are in. Houston had the fasted average growing economy from 1990 through 2005 or so. I think it was something like the 32nd largest economy of any nation.

Houston does have a good job market and places to shop and eat, after that I can't say anything good about it. I HATE living here and am going to move to N.C. where there are four seasons and something beautiful to look at. Houston and Dallas are too HOT and FLAT. My advise stay away from both cites.

Default opinionated answers....

1. Job Market:

First off, how is the job market in general? I'm working on my degree in both video production and graphic design. My mom is in the banking industry and has her real estate licsence and my brother is into the music scene and visual arts. Does Houston or Dallas have a Job market for all these things?

A. Both but probably Dallas moreso

2. Which city supports the Arts more? This includes visual arts, music and film

A. Dallas I would think

3. Which city has better opportunity for starting a business?

A. equal with maybe a slight edge to Houston

4. Which city is better where cost of living is concerned, especially home prices?

A. Houston

5. Which city has better weather?

I know both cities are hot, but which one is more manageable?

A. depends on personal preference.....See Trainwreck's answer

6. Which city has the worst crime?

A. Houston until they can weed out the Katrina refugees with a criminal bent. (Houston crime up 12% or so)

7. Which city has the best entertainment and more things to do leisure wise?

A. Again a toss up...my guess is Houston with their proximity to the Gulf (Houston is larger)

8. Which city is popular with celebrities?

A. Houston

9. Which city has a more diverse population and diverse culture?

A. Houston

10. Which city has better school districts?

A. this is a research you can do.....plenty of resources to investigate this on the WWW. I have seen sites posted on this site if the administrators haven't removed them (they're pretty aggressive).

In the end either city would be a good choice along with San Antonio (Which has overtaken Dallas as the 2nd largest city in Texas).

..............why do you hang around here hammering Texas? Why don't you go over to the North Carolina boards and stay over there telling them how much you love it there and want to go there. It is much more constructive and polite to say good things about people and places, even if it is just your opinions. You know what they say about opinions! JMHO!

That is not "the truth" . It is called personal preference. HUGE difference. I love the Carolina's (South over North ) and they both have great qualities. Would I live there? NO!!! I'd actually rather live in S. Carolina over North and that is just by my personal observations from what has been posted on their boards and visits to the areas. But that is "MY" personal preference. Someone elses is going to be totally different.

1. Job Market:

Pretty equal in both cities.

2. Which city supports the Arts more? This includes visual arts, music and film

Both do, but Dallas may slightly more.

3. Which city has better opportunity for starting a business?

Probably Houston.

4. Which city is better where cost of living is concerned, especially home prices?

Houston.

5. Which city has better weather?

Depends. Houston has milder temperatures, but Dallas is less humid. Dallas will have more extremes in temperatures (both summer and winter).

6. Which city has the worst crime?

It used to be Dallas, until the hurricane Katrina evacuees showed up in Houston. So now, it's probably pretty equal.

7. Which city has the best entertainment and more things to do leisure wise?

Will be similar, but probably Houston.

8. Which city is popular with celebrities?

Dallas.

9. Which city has a more diverse population and diverse culture?

Houston.

10. Which city has better school districts?

Depends on the area.

In Texas, Dallas is an uppity, rather close-minded city where you dress to impress. On the other hand, Austin is a very laid-back city where almost anything goes and weirdness is good. Houston is somewhere between these two. But Houston is the largest city in the state and has lots of population diversity... you can find almost any kind of culture and ethinic group.

No city in North Carolina can touch Houston. NC cities on the whole, suck!
