Most people's (especially outsiders) impressions of Houston are off, especially when it comes to being green.

Here's yet another ranking showing Houston's not too shabby on the green city topic.

http://www.siemens.com/press/pool/de...i-report-e.pdf

Overall, Houston is #16 on the list (which rated 27 US and Canadian cities). Ahead of places like Dallas, Montreal, Atlanta, Miami, Pittsburgh, and Phoenix.

It ranks in the top 10 in the Buildings and Waste categories, and top 5 in Environmental Governance category. In fact, the only category with a lackluster showing is Co2/Air.

Houston ranked 16th in that index not exactly the best of rankings... and to further debunk your presumption...

America's Dirtiest Cities

There is NO WAY that the city of Houston is dirtier then the city of San Francisco!

What presumption? It's in the middle on the Overall category (a lot higher than most would probably expect) and higher than that on a few select categories.

Not sure if they looked at green power purchasers, or it would be top in that.

Presumption was the wrong word to use... perhaps "claim" would have worked better.

In that Siemens article it claims that Houston is doing well in "land use" and "transport" which I cannot agree with. How can a city this large claim to have efficient land use. Things are so spread out and the city just builds bigger, longer highways to make sure enough people are using their cars to drive to places. Oh, but wait this press released only looked at how many trees were being planted and green space is built. Guess they completely overlooked the sprawl, maybe they are not from around here... with almost a tourist like view... Also if you read that press release, it only talks about how houston's government is undergoing a "green" transformation. Which doesnt necessarily mean that the city as a whole is "green", the citizens have to be willing to change also.

I do agree with buildings though. Houston is building more and more facilities which are built with energy efficiency in mind.
