not just Galveston, as Houston has many amenities........

There are some very nice hotels in Houston, but I wouldn't call it a "resort town". There's not much that's overly luxurious about the Houston area, atleast not for those who actively pursue an epicurean lifestyle. Miami is really the only city in the south that fits that description (and maybe some mountain resorts in the Appalachians).

Definitely not a resort town. From Wikipedia:

"Typically, the economy of a resort town is geared almost entirely towards catering to tourists, with most residents of the area working in the tourism or resort industry."

Like Hilton Head Island, SC, or Aspen, CO.

Wow, Houstonians can be quite negative towards their city. I'm pretty sure Houston has some resort hotels on the beach. That right there should make it a little "resorty."

Agreed with maybe the addition of Orlando.

When I think of "relax" I don't think of Houston.

A few hotels on the beach don't make a resort town.

I don't think we are being negative. When I think of "resort town," I think of some beautiful place with a struggling economy if the tourists don't come.

Houston is not struggling...Houston is a boom town, and our economy is WAY more diversified than any resort town.

Exactly.

Houston is business/oil/medical/etc. - the restaurants, etc. are great - but they are here for the city, not for the tourists.

Houston is definitely more of a resort town than Birmingham. Hehe!
