We are relocating from Seattle in September and have never been to the area. My husband will be working in Sugar Land and we would like to rent while we get to know the area (at least a year). I've been reading up the posts about different areas, but would like to know what the rental market looks like. We would like a house in a neighborhood. We don't have kids, but are thinking about it, so getting to know other young families would be a plus. And we have a dog, so close to walkable areas too. Also (I know, I ask a lot...) we love to sail, any advice on watersports in SL? Any info on where we should be looking would be appreciated!

The master planned communities in Sugar Land are great for walking (First Colony, New Territory, Telfair, Greatwood, etc.) as there are a lot of paths throughout the neighborhoods but Sugar Land is not the best place for sailing. Clear Lake has a sailing club - http://www.clearlakesailingclub.org/ - maybe connect with their members to learn more about the Houston sailing community.

You can definitely find rental houses - try HAR.com : Houston Real estate, Houston homes, Houston Realtors, TX Homes - "Find A Home" and then "Residential Lease."

We lived in Seattle for 10 years, too. We are thankful for sunshine every single day.

^ What Topaz said.

The Houston-area water sports will be around Clear Lake (southeast of Houston) and Lake Conroe (way north of Houston.)

Sugar Land is a great little town, convenient to Houston, and will be a really nice commute if work is also here (that's how we ended up here too.) More on Sugar Land here.

HAR is a great tool. Renting for a year or more is a good idea. We had friends who rented in the Highlands - small old houses, but super convenient location. When looking in Sugar Land, I'd stay south of West Airport Blvd... and Greatwood is okay, but I'd avoid River Park. Hard to go wrong anywhere in Sugar Land otherwise.

Welcome!

If you're looking for great rents. I would recommend you drive around the residential neighbourhoods. There are signs rent by owner which is where you will receive your best deals.

Avoid real estate companies or Craigslist they only advertise higher priced rents. You'll wind up renting a house for 1800 montly instead of 1100.00
