Great posts -- thanks for all the ideas. Now, for a follow-up question: Does the answer change at all if you're looking to buy property? Once the house is paid off (at least a few years away) I'd like to buy 15 - 20 acres somewhere that I could build on down the road -- do any of these places have fairly cheap land available (~10k an acre), or are they 'too touristy'?

It's cheaper to live in Tenn than NC.

It is a fairly easy two day drive to the middle of the Colorado Rockies (Aspen-Snowmass-Vail, etc.) where we are sitting out the heat as I write this.

For me, I have been trying to go to Western NC, Eastern TN, and NE GA for my mountain fix. Last year we were going to go to West Virgina but went to Costa Rica instead (3 hour flight from Houston) - and that was a wonderful trip with lots of mountains.

I haven't been to the Ozarks yet. I read somewhere the mountains in West Texas are higher in elevation than the Ozarks. I would like a trip to either one. I really, REALLY miss mountains.

I'm going back to NE GA/Western NC for a week in October and I can't wait!

TStone, that picture is gorgeous! :-)

I really, REALLY miss mountains. Texascrude, I totally understand where you are coming from. I need my yearly mountain "fix" too.

Arkansas, we have a place there in nw AR. Its ten hours driveway to driveway, we've made it in nine. Highway 7 all the way down to Hot Springs is beautiful, as well as off that track. Lots of high areas and hairpin turns, cabins and so on.

I've travelled through OK, MO, AR, etc.
and the most beautiful place I've been to is the area "Table Rock Lake" just South of Branson, MO.
If you drive there, you can drive through Eastern Oklahoma. (Lots of hills)

I don't know if Lake Ouachita in Arkansas is similar (never been there)
